FAQs

What does the ISDN package from Brain include?
The ISDN package from Brain contains the username and a password that the user needs in order to connect to the internet at a maximum of 128Kbps speed, depending upon the package purchased.
Who will provide the equipment required to use an ISDN package?
The equipment required to use and ISDN package includes an ISDN line and an ISDN modem both provided by PTCL.

What is the maximum bandwidth I can get on ISDN?
An ISDN line can support up to a maximum of 128Kbps CIR bandwidth.

How can I know if ISDN is available in my area?

You can call PTCL Value Added Services (VAS) on 111-20-20-20 to inquire about the availability of ISDN line in your area.

I already have a telephone line in my premises; can I use an ISDN package on my ordinary telephone line?
No. In order to use ISDN services, you must have a digital phone line subscribed from PTCL along with the ISDN modem.

What is the difference between regular dialup and ISDN?
A regular dialup operates on your regular phone line with a simple modem. ISDN is quiet similar to regular dialup when seen from the end user point of view except that it requires an enhanced telephone line known as ISDN line and also an enhanced modem known as an ISDN modem that is used to connect to the internet at a higher speed. A simple dialup supports a maximum of 44Kbps and also the bandwidth is not consistent. You experience a non consistent service in case of regular dialup connection. ISDN on the other hand provides a dedicated CIR bandwidth and this bandwidth is consistent throughout the session. In ISDN, 64Kbps means you always get 64Kbps bandwidth whereas in regular dialup connections, the speed may vary according to conditions.

What are the access numbers that are used to connect to Brain?
You can use any of the following numbers to connect to Brain ISDN:
13145678
13108888

How can I check at what rate I’m transmitting and receiving data from Brain?
You can download tools from the internet that are used to monitor the traffic following through your network card. Examples include:
DU Meter
Net Medic

Why am I being continuously disconnected from Brain?
Disconnection occurs in case the following issues are encountered:
1. Your line voltage is less than what is required for the ISDN line to operate normally. Normally, an ISDN line carries signals at 96Volts. If the voltage in your ISDN line is below this limit, the connection between your modem and the ISP breaks continuously. Have your line checked by the local area lineman to confirm that your line is carrying the signals at this voltage.
2. Your ISDN line may be receiving interference from other electrical line that pass along with your ISDN line. Have your line checked by local lineman to resolve this problem.
3. You may have set the maximum speed of your modem more than the limit of your ISDN line. In Pakistan, the PTCL lines carry signals at a maximum of 57600bps. Set your modem speed to 57600bps.
Is there a limit for downloading and uploading data for the connection I get from Brain?
Yes. You can download a maximum of MB data using our ordinary ISDN Corporate packages. If you require a package without this restriction, you can call us on 042-210CORP.
I’m having problems in sending/receiving emails from my Outlook when using Brain.
In order to send mails using your outlook, you must set “smtp.brain.net.pk” as your outgoing mail server. Your incoming mail server will be according to the email server you use for your emails. The address of Brain’s incoming mail server, incase you’re using Brain’s mail account will be “brain.net.pk”.

My location is within a few kilometers of your POP. What cost do I have to pay to avail this service in my office?
In order to check the feasibility of providing our services to your office, we should conduct a survey of the site where your office is located. For this you have to send us a formal proposal to have a survey conducted of your site. What is the performance of Brain MAN when compared to DSL and other broadband services available elsewhere?
Brain MAN bypasses all local exchanges of PTCL and hence provides best possible solution for high performance internet connectivity. Furthermore, you don’t have to invest heavily for the equipment that is used for other services like DSL. All you need is a simple LAN card installed in your PC to have access to the internet at ultra high speed.

I’m already using ISDN, why should I switch to Brain MAN?
Brain MAN is more reliable than ISDN and can provide more than 128Kbps connectivity over Ethernet. It is also cost efficient as compared to ISDN since it does not require any telephone line and hence you don’t have to pay the call charges and the line rent to PTCL. Brain MAN does have zero line rent and you are simply charged the amount of your monthly package or according to the bandwidth used in case you have purchased a volume based package.
I’m satisfied with the performance of my DSL, why should I switch to Brain MAN?
Brain MAN is far more reliable than DSL since it bypasses the PTCL exchanges and unreliable copper wires. With Brain MAN you are connected directly to Brain core optical fiber network which is then directly connected to the internet. It decreases the number of hops between your office and Brain hence providing better and more reliable services as compared to any other service that is being offered elsewhere.

What is the difference between shared and CIR packages?
In shared package, your browsing speed may vary depending upon the number of users using the internet at a specific time. Committed Information Rate (CIR) packages means that you will always get the committed data transfer rate. For example, your 64K shared package will not download data at exactly 64K all the time. The speed may be less than 64K at any specific download time whereas in CIR you will get 64K every time you download any data from the internet at any time.

Is there any restriction on downloading data when using a shared package?
Shared packages are designed to ease the users in their common working that involves the use of internet like sending and receiving emails. Light browsing, small downloads etc. In shared packages you cannot download heavy data from the internet. If your work requires you to download heavy data from the internet you have to have a CIR package purchased from Brain.
